Furniture Styles
In this post, we’re going to look at Traditional, Mission and Shaker, and Rustic styles. In our next post we’ll take a look at a few more!
Traditional
Traditional furniture styles are inspired by Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical designs from France and England in the 18th and 19th centuries. You’ll see tufted fabrics, turned feet, and a balanced color palette.
If you like ornate detailing, richly toned woods, and luxurious fabrics, this style is for you!
Mission and Shaker
These two styles are born out of an Amish tradition that removed much ornamentation in order to highlight the natural beauty of the wood. Mission style differs slightly from the minimalist Shaker style by showcasing joinery, using rich wood stains, and relying on parallel slats to accentuate the wood grain.
If you enjoy simple, superior craftsmanship but prefer understated pieces to blend well with other classic styles, this is a good style for you.
Rustic
This style is just like it sounds: it features solid, rough-hewn wooden pieces with rich finishes. It’s what you imagine furnishes a warm, cozy mountain cabin. Pieces are sometimes made from industrial materials or made to look reclaimed. Rustic pieces are oversized and work well in large spaces. They show off the natural characteristics of the wood, and depending on the stain, can pair with other styles such as country and farmhouse.
