Due to the unexpected circumstances of 2020, many people began working from home, and therefore had to upgrade their furniture in their home office (or create a home office entirely). This meant, for example, buying a new desk chair that was more comfortable than the dining room table chair they were using before for the occasional work project, because they would now be sitting for eight or more hours a day in it. It also meant upgrading the dining room table into a proper desk, too!
But even if you don’t work from home, it is sometimes necessary to add a desk to your house, or upgrade from an older one. Fireside Furniture has an amazing array of desks in different styles, sizes, and functionality, and in this article, we’re going to look at a few things you need to consider when looking for a new desk.
Buying A Desk For Kids
When buying a desk for a child, there are a few things to consider. One of these is that a child is still growing, so you may want one that is an adjustable size, or keep in mind that you may have to replace the desk as the child gets older.
Another important thing to consider is what will make the child comfortable while they’re doing their schoolwork. Children will most likely be writing quite a bit, as well as working on their computers. Because of this, there should be a certain height difference between the desk and the chair.
And while their desk will often be used for learning purposes, children are also imaginative and playful souls, and many kids work well in environments where they can have fun and be creative as well as work. A common way of giving them the fun they need is by matching their desk to the rest of their bedroom, or providing space for customization (such as stickers). From a practical perspective, as well, you’ll want to have plenty of drawers and storage units available for all of the kid’s books, pens, pencils, and other knickknacks.
Desks For Adults
When it comes to adults working from home, desks have the freedom to be more simplistic than a child’s, as well as a bit fancier (if you’d like it to be, of course). A person’s workstation always affects how a person works, so you should keep this in mind when you’re scoping out new desks. For some people, this may even mean that an adjustable standing desk would be a good option, design-wise, so a worker is not sitting for an extended amount of time—although the vast majority of people prefer to sit at a desk while they work.
The desk chose also needs to properly fit the needs and characteristics of the occupation of the adult. Most workers use a computer and/or work with a bit of paper and files, and need a lot of room for their materials. For this reason, some people go with an “L” shaped desk. This tends to give someone more room to spread out their computer and files.
A work desk will also be used quite often—every day for 8 hours, if not more—so you need it to be durable, with strong materials and sturdy construction. The drawers are another key factor in choosing a desk, as you’ll need to store your papers and office supplies, and many desks feature metal suspension rollers that are easy to open.
Finally, make sure you get a desk that is comfortable and aesthetically pleasing, as you’ll be sitting at it a lot!
