Country Style Furniture
Particularly into the 19th century, Americans celebrated rustic-looking furniture made by non-professional or local craftspeople. The general term for rusted-looking style, and the later styles designed to emulate pioneer-style furnishings, is country furniture. Rather than the refined furniture inspired by aristocratic Europe, this style was the utilitarian furniture of the people.
Country Style Furniture brings to mind the farm lifestyle of gathering together after a hard day or season of work. This simple, solidly built furniture is built to last from one generation to the next. Sometimes called Farmhouse Furniture, Country Style Furniture has many features.
This style tends to be simple and modest with a solid, handmade look. In addition, it features American woods such as maple, oak, and pine. Many pieces have worn or distressed finishes thus making new pieces look aged. Also, large tables, chairs, and even benches make it easy for large groups to come together as they did many years ago around the farmhouse.
